For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of having shelves to style, and what do you know? God gave us this perfect little house and these built in shelves are literally my dream. There’s only one problem, I am no pro at shelf styling. (SEND HELP!) But I do enjoy it, and it’s so fun to change it up! So take a look and tell me what you think! If you have any tips or tricks for shelf styling, leave me a comment!
I take everything off of my shelves (Marie Kondo?!) and start from scratch. It gives me more inspiration doing it this way. And I very much love things to look clean and not too cluttered
A couple of tips I’ve learned along the way :
- Flip your books backward so the pages are showing, not the spine. It’s just more aesthetically pleasing in most cases.
- Take the dust cover off of the book if it has one. Usually there’s a really pretty hardcover book underneath that dust cover!
- Don’t be afraid to use bigger pieces on your shelves — as opposed to using a ton of little, tiny pieces. Finding a balance between the big pieces and smaller pieces is key.
- There is a rule to decorating that has been said, to use groupings of three! And I’m sure we all gravitate toward doing that anyway. It’s like that’s just automatically what is pleasing to the eye! For the most part, I did the groups of three, but there are some spots where they stilll look “bare” and that’s ok! I’ll find the perfect pieces eventually!
These shelves are definitely still a work in progress. Like I feel like even these photos above still aren’t exactly what I want them to look like. But that’s the fun of styling! Right?! I’ve added a gallery below so you can shop similar items! I find a lot of stuff at thrift stores for my shelves, but other great places are Home Goods, TJ Maxx + Kirklands to name a few!
